It can be scary sometimes when emergencies happen, especially when you are not prepared or expecting them. While you can take a vacation, and get away from everyday life, you can't take a vacation from your health and problems that arise. Dr. Johnson and our team here at JFD figured we would give our patients a few suggestions on handling dental emergencies from anywhere and what symptoms to look out for:
Broken Teeth. Rinse off the root of the tooth with water if it appears dirty and try to put it back in. If that doesn't work, then put it in some milk and head to the dentist ASAP.
Lost Crown or Filling. If you happen to have dental glue handy (which you most likely do not), you can apply it to reattach the crown until you can get to a dentist. Dental wax will also work to protect your mouth and tongue from getting cut from sharp edges.
Pounding Toothache. Sometimes when a tooth is hurting it could be the because a piece of food is logged in between your teeth. Flossing or simply brushing your teeth can fix the problem and could help remove the object. If the pain continues, try taking an anti-inflammatory over-the-counter medication until you can get to the dentist.
Bitten Tongue or Lip. Place a cold compress to reduce inflammation on the affected area and make sure to keep it clean and free of bacteria. Get yourself to the doctor or emergency center ASAP.
