Inflammation of the gums (gingivitis) is the earliest stage of gum disease. Having this disease can be threatening not only to your oral health, but your all over general health as well. It is vital to monitor yourself and recognize if you have certain signs or symptoms of gingivitis so proper care and treatment can be performed before it turns into something detrimental. Here are some factors and warning signs that you need to be aware of when determining if you are a candidate for gum disease.
Your gums are inflamed. Having gums that are swollen or inflamed are the main warning sign of gingivitis. This type of infection produces bad bacteria in your mouth and gums which then turns on your body's natural defense mechanism against infection or injury, swelling. If there is soreness, swelling, redness or high temperature you have inflammation in your gums that can lead to a serious gum infection called periodontitis.
You have other risk factors. If you have a history of gum disease in your family, are a smoker, have diabetes, are pregnant and/or have a weakened immune system you are at a greater risk of developing gingivitis.
Your teeth are/have moved. Noticing that your teeth have moved around or seem oddly spaced apart can indicate signs of gum disease. Gum disease also causes your gum line to subside.
Gingivitis is a very treatable condition, but you need the help of Dr. Johnson to keep it in check.
