When a woman is pregnant she experiences many changes, these changes also include her oral health. Because of the surging of hormones, women who already have gum disease or any other oral condition may see their symptoms worsen when pregnant. This condition is called "Pregnancy Gingivitis" because of the rising progesterone and estrogen levels, women start to develop this just 8 weeks into pregnancy; this is mainly found in the frontal region of the mouth.
Pregnant women also are at risk for developing swollen noncancerous tumors in the mouth due to inflamed gums. Research proves that with good overall oral hygiene and routine dental checkups, this can be avoided or controlled leaving you at a lower risk of these symptoms. There is also a link between pregnancy and low birth weight because of the excess of bacteria entering the bloodstream traveling to the uterus and inducing premature labor.
Tooth Erosion in women with severe morning sickness and frequent vomiting can in time erode the enamel from the teeth. It is major that you do not brush your teeth right after vomiting because of the acid still in your mouth. This acid helps erode the teeth even more and causes high levels of pH in your mouth.
When Should You See Your Dentist?
If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, consulting with your dentist is vital. Your dentist will assess your oral health and set up a dental plan for the rest of your pregnancy. Routine cleanings and monitoring are also important in the effectiveness of your oral hygiene.
If for some reason brushing your teeth causes more sickness while pregnant, rinse your mouth out with mouthwashes that contain antiplaque or fluoride to keep it healthy. Foods rich in Vitamin C and B12 also help keep your oral cavity strong and maintained.
